From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Genealogy (from Greek: γενεά, genea, "generation"; and λόγος, logos, "knowledge") is the study of families and the tracing of their lineages and history. Genealogists use oral traditions, historical records, genetic analysis, and other records to obtain information about a family and to demonstrate kinship and pedigrees of its members. The results are often displayed in charts or written as narratives. The pursuit of family history tends to be shaped by several motivations, including the desire to carve out a place for one's family in the larger historical picture, a sense of responsibility to preserve the past for future generations, and a sense of self-satisfaction in accurate storytelling. Some scholars differentiate between genealogy and family history, limiting genealogy to an account of kinship, while using "family history" to denote the provision of additional details about lives and historical context. GNU Free Documentation License What can i do with old genealogy records? Q. My mom recently passed away and left 4 file drawers of research. I don't have a use for this information but would a Genealogy Society or something else use them? Asked by Mountain Betty - Fri Nov 23 16:26:58 2007 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. There are 3 places I can think of that would be happy to take your Mom's research. 1. Your local LDS Center 2. Your local library if they have a genealogist 3. Your local genealogy society First I would ask Family members if any of them are doing research. If they are, then perhaps one of them would love to have it. Answered by Holly N - Fri Nov 23 17:41:40 2007 Is there a computer program that can make a reverse family tree / genealogy chart? Q. I have found a lot of programs that help make the usual family tree chart, however I can't seem to find any that will make a reverse genealogy chart. (Starting with the oldest couple in the family and then going forwards to include their children, and children's children, etc.) Does anyone know of a program that will do this? Asked by Mira - Tue May 12 22:41:15 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. I have a program called Roots that will print the report from the oldest to the youngest. However, I don't know if they make that program for Windows. Most of the programs ought to run a report for descendants as well as ancestors. Q. Do they really have my family genealogy? If so, how did they get it? Aren't we all protected by privacy act? Asked by Hickemtwiddle - Fri May 12 12:27:25 2006 - - 10 Answers - 2 Comments A. As a member also, I agree with Mr B11. Please check out www.familysearch.org, and if possible, a local center near you. People have nothing to fear with the information at the FHC, it is there only to help those searching for their family lineage. Much of my maternal and paternal family can be found, and has been found, through the LDS information. Much we have supplied ourselves. However, my husband's family is not. I feel I must do everything I can to find and gather this information. You do not need to be LDS to use this resource. You just need to be patient and diligent.
