From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Genealogy (from Greek: γενεά, genea, "generation"; and λόγος, logos, "knowledge") is the study of families and the tracing of their lineages and history. Genealogists use oral traditions, historical records, genetic analysis, and other records to obtain information about a family and to demonstrate kinship and pedigrees of its members. The results are often displayed in charts or written as narratives. The pursuit of family history tends to be shaped by several motivations, including the desire to carve out a place for one's family in the larger historical picture, a sense of responsibility to preserve the past for future generations, and a sense of self-satisfaction in accurate storytelling. Some scholars differentiate between genealogy and family history, limiting genealogy to an account of kinship, while using "family history" to denote the provision of additional details about lives and historical context. GNU Free Documentation License What is the best genealogy software out there and why do you feel that it is the best? Q. I am looking for a good genealogy software package that will run on Microsoft Windows XP. I've used Family Tree Maker in the past; however, you never know if you have the latest version. It seems that they come out with a new version practically once per month. Please keep price, quality, and ease of use in mind when giving a recommendation. Also, I would like to store a photograph or two (at least) of the person, scans of paperwork regarding the person, and maybe even a voice recording if possible. Lots of places for photo, notes, maps and such. It's usually only once a year that they update their program. I like the book making part of the program. Answered by LOIS ANN - Sun Oct 22 21:06:57 2006 Is there good Free software for organizing Genealogy? Q. My family has a huge genealogy line and would like to organize onto a flashdrive. Is there any free software to do so? Perferrably virus and spyware free. Asked by Lex - Fri Jun 5 13:01:50 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. There are several good free programs, any of which could be installed on a flashdrive, assuming your drive is large enough: PAF, Legacy, Family Tree Builder, Family Tree Legends, GRAMPS (for Linux/Unix), and others. These are all reputable programs without spyware, viruses, etc. Be sure to download from the maker or a reputable source to avoid malware added later (not part of the original program). To find more, google "free genealogy software". You will want a program that does not need a lot of space to leave more room for data, notes, and other files. I would be very grateful. Asked by Jay-Blue Afterglow - Sat Aug 16 02:09:41 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. the classic encyclopedia of genealogy sources (great beginner section). As for appearance.. your best source on this is immediate or extended family, that may have old pictures. Older ones won't be in color, of course. WW1 draft registration is one that has description. And everyone wants free. There are some costs to research. Ancestry.com has the best collection of census records, so forth (draft cards are from there). If you want GOOD research, you will find that it is well worth the cost. Answered by wendy c - Sat Aug 16 05:40:16 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Genealogy" Preserving memories
